In 1276, Edward I granted the town a charter to hold a market. The market is still held today every Saturday
The town relied on the wool trade up until the turn of the sixteenth century, when graphite was found in closeby Borrowdale. Keswich became then became involved in the production of pencils. The Cumberland Pencil Museum in Main Street is well worth a visit
The town holds an annual Christian convention, a film festival and beer festival
