
Cockermouth is located on the fringe of the Lake District National Park at the confluence of the rivers Derwent and Cocker

The town was built in the 12th century and is still basically laid out in its original medieval street plan

In the thirteenth century, Henry III granted Cockermoutj market charters, though it is thought a market pre dates these evnts

William and Dorothy Wordsworth were both born in the town. All five of their children were born in - what is now called - Wordsworth House, which is on Main Street. This impressive Georgian house was built in 1744 and has a working eightennth century kitchen

Cockermouth is twinned with the town of Marvejols in France

Parts of Cockermouth Castle date to the thirteenth century. The castle is privately owned by the Egremont family. The stronghold was partly destroyed by Robert the Bruce

There are a number of museums in Cockermouth, including the Creighton Mineral and Fossil Museum and the Working Museum of Printing
