Parts of a Roman road have been excavated in Penrith
Buildings in Penrith are made from a characteristic local red sandstone from Beacon Fell. The castle was also constructed using the sandstone in the between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries and was used to defend against the Scots
Penrith's Church of St. Andrew was first built in the 12th century and partly restored in the eighteenth century
There are a number of historic buildings in Penrith, notably Penrith Museum which was once a 17th century schoolhouse and the Town Hall which was once two houses designed by Robert Adam and built in the late eighteenth century. William Wordsworth's brother John lived in one of the houses. Wordsworth wrote about Penrith Beacon in 'The Prelude'. Thethe Clock Tower, in the centre of the town, was put up in 1861 to commemorate Philip Musgrave of Edenhall
