Carlisle is the county town of Cumbria and has had a very colourful history spanning over 2000 years.
The town is situated at the confluence of the rivers Caldew, Eden and Petteril close to the border with Scotland.
Carlisle was established during the Roman period to serve the forts on Hadrian's Wall.
In 1092, William Rufus built Carlisle Castle. The stronghold was once prison for Mary, Queen of Scots.
The priory became Carlisle Cathedral after the town gained the status of a diocese in 1122.
