The Victorian seaport of Barrow-in-Furness is the maritime gateway to the Furness Peninsula and originally formed part of Lancashire.
In 1839 the iron industry brought prosperity to the town on the arrival of the iron prospector Henry Schneider.
The rapid growth of the town in the 19th and 20th centuries gave Barrow-in-Furness the nickname of the 'English Chicago'.
A popular attraction in the town is the Dock Museum. This modern museum straddles a Victorian Graving Dock.
The ruins of the twelfth century Cistercian abbey is worth a visit along with the adjacent Custodian's cottage which offers a glimpse into medieval life.
